Dear Members, Friends and Colleagues

I am very sad to announce the sudden and unexpected death of our founder member, Peg Belson. She died on 2 January 2012 in her 91st year. Although understandably frail over the last decade, Peg continued to pursue her many commitments and social engagements. She was at the forefront of making certain that the centre of all consideration for everyone looking after sick children should be the wellbeing of that child. She will be deeply missed by all in this field of sick children and young people.

Her many achievements are listed in the Sydney University Alumni Award for lifelong achievement given to Peg recently, a copy of which can be seen at www.sydney.edu.au/alumni/usukaa-award

Action for Sick Children has lost a truly significant voice, speaking out intelligently and fluently as well as publishing important articles on behalf of the needs of all sick children. We send to her family our deepest sympathy and may they know that their mother was inspirational for the field of work in which she was involved, not only in this country, but around the world.

Action for Sick Children will always be indebted to Peg Belson for the great work in which she was involved during her lifetime.

With great sadness

2011 was a busy year for Action for Sick Children. We celebrated our 50th anniversary in April & held parties in hospitals around the country. We also held an awards ceremony for our children's art competition winners in London in October. We are hoping for another successful year ahead in 2012.

With best wishes from all the staff at

50th Anniversary Spotlight on Action for Sick Children

Action for Sick Children Helpline

The Action for Sick Children Helpline was set up 20 years ago. It is a freephone helpline and is manned from Monday to Friday 9.30am-4.30pm.

It is available for parents and carers and children and young people to use if you have a problem or query regarding your child's healthcare, from how to register your child with a GP to what to expect when they need to go into hospital.

Helpline Case Studies

A parent contacted the Helpline with huge concerns about an up-coming life saving operation that her child would be having. She didn't feel that the concerns and worries that she had  about this procedure were being heard by her child's medical team. She wanted to put a stop to the operation until she had been given an opportunity to speak openly and freely with the medical team. Advice and support was offered to help this parent find a way that she could communicate with her child's medical team.

A young person contacted the Helpline with concerns about GP confidentiality with regards to her healthcare. Advice was given over the telephone and a copy of  the Action for Sick Children 'Consenting to Treatment for Children and Young People' leaflet was sent to them.

If you would like to contact the Helpline please phone 0800 074 4519
