Action for Sick Children Current Projects

Dental Playbox Project

At Action for Sick Children we believe that children (and their parents) are much less anxious about visits to the hospital, doctor or dentist if they are fully informed in advance of any treatments they may be involved in.

Dental healthcare is just as important as any other healthcare and in fact, good dental care helps to maintain healthy lives. The latest project to be initiated by Action for Sick Children is to use of "Dental Play boxes". These boxes help children to learn through play how to understand dental treatment and encourage them to co-operate with the dentist, which in turn makes a visit to the dentist a much less scary experience. This scheme is already very successful in Scotland and has recently been launched throughout England.

Some of the items inside the Playbox are dressing up outfits, a wide selection of toys and jigsaws, videos, books, dental tools and leaflets. For a full list of contents and more information please contact our playbox co-ordinator at project@actionforsickchildren.org

Park the Car - Park the Charges Campaign

“For some Parents, finding a hospital parking space can be a problem… But paying for it can be an even bigger nightmare…”

New research shows parents could be excluded from playing an essential role on the healthcare team if they cannot meet hospital parking charges

“A cardinal principle of hospital services for children is complete ease of access to the child by his or her parent.  This is not a luxury.  It is now generally accepted that the care and comfort of parents for a child is fundamental to the care and treatment of children in hospital”
(Department of Health, 1991).

Naturally, a parent will do anything to be by their child’s side when they require medical treatment.  But Action for Sick Children is concerned that some children miss essential hospital appointments due to parent’s worries about the travel and parking costs involved.

You can provide valuable help in making changes.

We invite parents and healthcare professionals to contact your local MP, Primary Care Trusts and NHS Hospital Trusts and urge for a review of parking policies.  You can use contact Action for sick children to voice your support for our campaign.

Or you can make a donation so that Action for Sick Children can continue its valuable work in ensuring that sick children always receive the highest standard of healthcare possible.
