Meet the Dental Playbox® Team – Cheryl

Over the next few weeks we will be introducing you to a different member of the Dental Playbox® project team.

What is the Dental Playbox®?

We set up the Dental Playbox® project in 2007 in response to the alarming increase in dental decay in young children. It continues today to not only reduce this issue but also to stem the ever-increasing numbers of young children becoming hospitalised due to tooth decay. According to statistics, over one third of children in the UK have tooth decay by the time they start primary school!

The project’s key aim is to teach young children about the importance of good oral hygiene, healthy eating and to prepare them from an early age for a trip to the dentist. This is all done through the powerful medium of play. Play is crucial at the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) so the project slots in perfectly with the curriculum. If a setting in the Oldham area books a session they will receive a visit from Cheryl, who is our Oldham based Dental Playbox® project Facilitator.

Cheryl’s Story

“I am Cheryl and I work as a Play Facilitator for the Action for Sick Children Dental Playbox® project based in Oldham.

Dental Playbox® project Facilitator

Cheryl our Dental Playbox® project Facilitator based in Oldham.

The last thirty five years I have worked as an oral health promoter in Oldham for the NHS in all its different disguises.  I trained as a dental nurse in a practice in New Moston for three years where I learned every aspect of dentistry from dentures to health promotion. This training was necessary so that I could eventually take my dental nurse exams.

A large bulk of my thirty five years was spent working in children’s dentistry in Oldham.

As part of my interest in all oral health issues I also have a Certificate in Nutrition. I am a qualified Stop Smoking Advisor, and have a basic teaching certificate for adults (PTTLS).

On a personal level I am married with grown up children. I enjoy exploring different countries and have a bolt hole in North Wales.  I enjoy gardening, decorating the house (much to my husband’s dismay!), spending time with my mum, and have recently gone back to knitting.

As a Dental Playbox® project Facilitator I have the best job as I enjoy the interaction with the children. I also enjoy

passing on new information to their carers so they learn alongside the children. It is also rewarding to help settings to improve their working practices making it healthier for all.”
