5/5: GP's and Confidentiality:
Can I see what is written in my child's records?
Yes, you can ask to see your child's records kept by the GP. Most practices will share information with you, and explain the records if you ask. Sometimes you may be asked to apply in writing to see health records, but there shouldn't be a charge to see them. Older children can apply for access on their own behalf or refuse access to a parent or guardian,
Shouldn't I be told if my child visits the GP on her own?
People under the age of 16 are owed the same duty of confidentiality as any other person. However, staff will normally try and persuade a child under 16 to tell her parents about any consultation. If your child doesn't want you to be informed, her GP has to respect this, and can only break confidentiality in exceptional circumstances, when he believes this to be in the best interests of the child. Under 16's may consent to I medical treatment if the GP believes they understand the nature of the treatment
