Does my child have to go to Out-Patients?

Most of your child's illnesses can be treated by your GB health visitor or practice nurse. However, sometimes your GP may feel that your child needs to be seen by a hospital doctor who specialises in looking after children -called a pediatrician. Your child may also have to go to Out-Patients if she needs to have special tests, an operation or for follow-up appointments after a stay in hospital.

What should I ask my GP?

It your GP feels your child needs to go to hospital, ask who you are going to see and what kind of specialist the doctor is. Your GP should also explain how they hope the specialist will be able to help. Make a note of the specialist's name and any details you think are important.

It's quite natural to feel apprehensive and concerned about your child, but having as much information as possible can put your mind at rest and can help if your child asks you questions.
