2/4 Before you go:

What's the procedure?

First your GP writes to the hospital consultant giving details about your child's condition. The consultant's secretary then sends you an appointment to see the consultant in the Out-Patient department of the hospital. This department is only for day appointments so you don't have to worry about your child staying overnight.

What if my child gets worse?

If your child's symptoms get worse before your appointment, phone the hospital and speak to the consultant's secretary. Explain who you are and your concerns. The secretary may then be able to arrange an earlier appointment for you.

Is there anything I should do?

Your appointment letter should give details of which department you need to go to and who you need to see. If you are not sure about anything, give the hospital a call.

Hospitals can be very big, so leave plenty of time to gel to the right place and don't forget to ask for directions. If your child needs an ambulance ask your GP to arrange this in advance, and if you're driving don't forget to take small change for the hospital car park. If possible ask a friend or relative to come with you on the day - it'll be a great support.
