4/4 What happens next:
Will my child need more tests?
This all depends on what the consultant finds. The consultant may want to have special tests like blood tests or X-rays done. If this is the case you will have to go to another department. Sometimes you can have these done on the same day or you might have to come back.
What if my child needs an operation?
The consultant will talk to you about what needs to be done and how this will help your child. This can be a lot of information to take in so don't be afraid to ask questions, including how long your child will have to wait for the operation.
What if I'm given a prescription?
If the consultant prescribes medicines for your child make sure you understand how long they should be taken for and how often. Don't forget to ask about any side effects and what you should do. Your consultant's prescription should be taken to the hospital pharmacy. After this is finished you will need to go to your GP if your child needs more medicine.
Can we contact the consultant?
After your child sees the consultant she becomes one of his patients so you contact him through his secretary at the hospital. Don't forget to ask him the best time to ring, if you need to speak to him urgently about your child.
