ACTION FOR SICK CHILDREN is a registered charity, founded over fifty years ago at a time when parents were actively discouraged from staying with their child and visiting hours were very restricted – it is indeed thanks to the hard work of our founders that we have the family orientated environment in hospitals that we all enjoy today!

Mother Care of Children in Hospital established
Changes name to National Association for the
Welfare of Children in Hospital (NAWCH)

1970 - 1980

Survey of Visiting Arrangements and Play Provision
Inadequacies presented to Regional Hospital Boards

1980 - 1990

Wins visiting hours campaign
First of the “Setting Standards” publications

1990 - 2000

Changes name to Action for Sick Children
With Health in Mind published (review of mental
health services for children and young people)
Launches “Too dear to visit” campaign

2000 - 2010

Best Practice Training programme developed
Best Practice Award launched
Park the car Park the charges campaign launched
Launch of Dental Playbox® Project

2010 - today

Continuing involvement with other organisations e.g.
NICE, RCPCH, National Voices etc.
50th Anniversary Celebrations – including Jubilee
Lecture and Children’s Art Competition
